January 25, 2026 at 10:00 am • Dr. Robert Kramer Since Israel's occupation of Gaza and the West Bank in 1967, Palestinians have championed a form of non-violent resistance called "sumūd" (resilience). More than a mere slogan, it both explains and animates most aspects of daily life, from where people shop and what they buy, to how they interact with Israelis and foreigners, to how they handle acts of provocation. Taught to the children, lauded in literature and emblazoned in public art, sumūd is widely credited for maintaining the morale of the Palestinian people as they navigate the mounting challenges of a seemingly-intractable conflict.
